April was very chaotic for me. Work has been chaotic, and then the last month of my undergrad degree, as you can imagine, has also been rather chaotic! But it’s a new month, and I’m now officially a graduate! I have more time to read now, and I couldn’t be happier! Im also very happy that I now have much more free time to read! That being said, here are some of the books I’m planning on reading during the month of May!

Ah, a new month, which means a new TBR! I know that with this semester almost being over, I might not have as much time to read anymore, but I’m still looking forward to a lot of these. I hope I’ll be able to read a lot this month, but I won’t be too upset if I read at least one or two of these.

This is a story about the last vestiges of humanity escaping a threat (some scary robot aliens), and running into a new one on the planet of Kamaria. It’s told from a few different perspectives. Humans face the threat of extinction in a new world that brings new threats that humans have no idea how to face. It is mainly told from the perspective of Eliana Veston, a doctor trying to save her fellow humans from a pandemic called “lung-lock” that is killing off colonists, and Denton Castus, an engineer who finds a safe haven in Kamaria. The hunt for a cure brings humans face to face with a threat humans have named -the Sirens- and the Sirens are not happy to be sharing their home.
The plot was pretty fast paced and moved really quickly. There were very sparse moments that it moved slowly, but the pacing wasn’t so off that I couldn’t stay focused on it. It was break-neck most of the time, and it hit all of the beats just right and from the first chapter I was hooked.
The world building here was some of the best I’ve seen in a while. The world of Kamaria, which is an Earth-like planet that humans run to after Earth and the entirety of the Sol system is overrun by a scary robot like alien called the Undriel. Kamaria, while having some similiarities to Earth, it is very different and you can tell that T.A. Bruno put a lot of work into his world building. The world of Kamaria features many many different animals and a race of aliens called the auk’nai, which is a race of humanoid telepathic birds. They have their own culture and are very fleshed out. The world building was half the fun since it was so well done.
The characters, Denton, Eliana and the whole cast of side characters were all so unique and different. You can tell that T.A Bruno put a lot of effort into writing them and giving them each a unique voice. I can’t say which one was my favorite because I like them all quite a bit. I loved the interactions between Denton and his family, some of those had me laughing out loud. I also liked the relationships and the way they progress throughout the events of the story.
The writing was great. It wasn’t flowery, which is the type of writing i typically love, but it was also not clinical. The action scenes and they way they were written made me feel like I was watching a movie The descriptions of the world, as stated above were also great. It made me feel like I was on an Earth that was not quite like our home planet. The writing had moments where it felt a little clunky but I feel like I notice these things much more when I’m reading it, knowing I’m going to review it, so that could just be me being overly-nit-picky. I still think that this book is worth the read and I would definitely read the sequel to this to find out where it goes from here.
In short, you should read this. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who loves adventure stories, and sci-fi stories about strange worlds.

This was a story about the end of the world and those who are destined to bring it. It mainly follows two characters, Sidra and Breseis. Sidra is a Myridian, otherwise known as a world ender. She is destined to end the world of Aetheria, and is making a desperate attempt to change her fate, she runs away from home, and from everything she has ever known.. Breseis is the daugther of a Myridian Hunter, leaving home with big dreams, with aspirations to prove that she is more than a failed Hunter.
The characters were very distinct with very different voices. Both characters are very vivid and feel alive. They have their own ambitions and were very fleshed out. I enjoyed going through this world with their very different perspectives. I also love that it was showing these two characters going to the same place for very different reasons and how their perspectives changed throughout this journey. They were also characters who were fallible, they were not perfect, they weren’t these all powerful Gods that fought and won with no effort. These characters made me invested in their story and in where they were going. I can’t wait to see where else they are going to go.
The world-building was pretty great too. The world here is fantastic actually. The world is full of magical and mythical creatures and an interesting and new magic system. I’ve never seen a magic system like this, and I’m loving it. There are also multiple kinds of magic in this world and it is very ingrained into the world building. One thing I’ll say is that sometimes it can be a little hard to see where you are in the world, but part of this is because flipping to the front of the book to see a map in an e-book can be tough for some (me lol). I love a good map, and this map is gorgeous. The world building and the way that Sonja built this world and the different cultures is very well thought out and I can’t wait to
The plot was decent, but there were moments that the plot lagged and the pacing was a little off for me. There were moments where the action was really high-octane, and then moments where it was sloooow. Regardless of that, it kept me engaged, even thought I had to push myself a little bit through the slower parts. I’m really excited to read the second one whenever it is released. I don’t want to give many details about the plot so at to not spoil anyone, but I highly recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy. This is definitely worth a shot.

1. The Silvered Serpents- Roshani Chokshi

Rating: 4 out of 5.
A wonderful sequel to The Gilded Wolves, a heist novel featuring a diverse cast. This one was more a quest to seek an artifact that was thought to have been lost to the past. The cast is just as diverse as before and I love them. I love how they interact with the world around them and even though it stands it how it stands against them, yet they still stand up to it, and its prejudices. The ending of the first book in the series broke me.
These characters have already gone through so much and the author, Roshani Chokshi, just keeps putting them THROUGH IT. There were also some twists and moments that I was not expecting. I felt so much for Severin, Laila, Enrique and Zofia. I know that they are all very flawed, but that is what makes them even better. Also, THERE’S A NEURODIVERGENT CHARACTER? Like, an ACTUAL neuro-divergent character, not a caricature. This character was accepted and accommodated and it wasn’t a bother? I love to see diverse ethnicities and types of characters.
Maybe it’s because I’m already so attached to these characters, but regardless, I can’t wait for the third book in this series. I thought that this was a duology, but it’s a trilogy, so that was certainly a nice surprise. Speaking of the ending, I felt like this kinda just ended? It was a little anti-climactic and it felt like there were significantly more lose ends. Hopefully all of these will be answered in the next book in the series.
One last thing, I think the writing in this is also gorgeous. It’s not overly flowery, but it’s still gorgeous. I think the author does a really good job of conveying feelings and emotions in her prose.
I know that a lot of people compare the first book to Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, but it’s nothing like that. Those books are compared because they have character groups that are found family partaking in a heist. The magical system here is totally different. The characters themselves are also different (and diverse). It can certainly appeal to those who like SOC, but don’t feel like it’s going to be exactly the same. I’m really happy I got the opportunity to read this. You can get it now at some of the links below 🙂
This is the second book in the series (?), so TECHNICALLY, you can read this one without reading the first one, Trace of Evil, but you’ll be missing out on some pretty vital background information about why the characters react the way that they do.
That being said, this is a series about Natalie Lockhart, a rookie detective in the town of Burning Lake. Historically this town saw the burnings of witches so they have a tourist industry surrounding it. Each of these books follows a different case as the BLPD solves it.
Overall, I felt like the mystery was good and well thought out. The characters are fleshed out, but I felt like the middle of this one was a little slow, at least compared to the first one. This one also ended with a cliffhanger that makes me think that there is going to be more books in this series. Since this is a mystery/thriller book, I don’t want to say more due to spoilers, but I’d definitely recommend this to those who are into cozy mysteries or crime/police thrillers.

4. The vanished birds- simon jimenez

This one was really good and definitely one that I enjoyed. The characters were very different and each had their own very distinct voices. I liked each perspective and didn't prefer one over the other. The plot was interesting and the interweaving timelines and vignettes that all fused together at the end to make the complex story had this as a book I will recommend. . The sci-fi elements kept me hooked. I highly recommend this one. Explaining what exactly it's about is... hard? I would recommend reading the synopsis and seeing if that's something that intrigues you because explaining WHAT exactly this is takes a lot of stepping around spoilers and the synopsis does it better than anything I could ever do.
This one was unfortunately, not for me. I was bored throughout, and felt like the only thing that was getting me through it was the only thing that was getting me through this one. I felt like it may have been building up to this large climax that just never happened. One thing I do like about it is that there is bi-sexual representation with one of the main characters, and there is also the world is queer normalized. I liked the world that the author built.
The characters were okay. The villain felt like he was evil for the sake of being evil. I wish his motivations had been explored a little bit more, because it really felt like he was evil just because he needed to be.
Just because I didn’t love this one doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a try! This one was very character driven, so if you love stories like that, I would definitely recommend it!

Persephone Station- Stina Leicht
Persephone Station is a community on the backwater planet of the same name, has been largely ignored by the United Republic of World. It has become the focus of the Serrao-Orlov Corporation due to secrets that the corporation wants to exploit. We follow Rosie, the owner of Monk’s Bar, a bar that caters to criminals and rich Earther tourists that are looking for a thrill and Angel, an ex marine who is the head of an organized band of criminals who have a penchant for doing the honorable thing. Angel is asked to perform a job for Rosie, and they both realize that this will affect Persephone more than they thought, and put Angel and her squad against an army.
Pst: This an an LGBT (with non-binary characters), “gals with guns” space opera with a fast paced plot and a wide diverse cast of characters. It’s one that I’m looking forward to.

The end of the shortest (but always seems to FEEL the LONGEST) month is finally here! That means a wrap up! I read – A LOT- of books in February. I have no idea how I read THIS much this month, since it was so busy for me! I had a good reading month, hopefully this continues into the new month of March. I re-read some favorites and found some new favorites too! (A Court of Silver Flames, The Space Between Worlds and We Set the Dark on Fire are all MUST reads) What did you read this month?
